"It was after having her first child that Laura Furiosi noticed a gap in the market for sun-safe swimwear for kids.“I had a little baby at the time and I was looking for something decent for her,” she says. “Her hat was always coming off, so we decided to clip them on to the back. There was a real need for it.”

Fast-forward eight years and the mother-of-three is at the helm of Rashoodz, a swimwear label for babies and children up to eight years old that is stocked in Japan, Thailand, the US and Britain.

It’s the only swimwear label in the world to collaborate with luxury British department store Liberty on a limited edition run of prints, and has just been picked up by David Jones, where the range of swim nappies, long-sleeved rashies and hat sets will be stocked from September.

“In Australia, to be in David Jones is a huge deal,” says Furiosi, a finalist in the AusMumpreneur of the Year Award. “The Japanese market loves our range. Sales skyrocketed after a Japanese film star photographed her son wearing Rashoodz and put it on Twitter. We’re doubling every year in turnover.” Although the business has grown steadily, Furiosi has just taken on her first employee and has no plans to expand the offering away from babies and toddlers.

“I really do want to focus on kids,” she says. “I think that’s more true to our brand.”
